Historical Accomplishments
2002–2003 Overview
In 2002–2003, Washington
Campus Compact’s commitment to the civic purposes
of higher education resulted in several successes
including:
- Procuring more than $845,000 in grant funds
to support and strengthen the network
of service-learning practitioners in Washington
state
- Procuring close to $2 million in student
scholarship funds for students involved
in service in the Campus Compact western
region
- Providing service support valued at more
than $300,000 by placing 22 full-time
AmeriCorps members on higher education
campuses
- Presenting the sixth annual Continuums
of Service conference, recognized as a
national model for professional development
for service-learning practitioners
- Engaging more than 5,000 students in service
through WACC programs statewide
2002–2003 Specifics
Campus Connections Program
(2002–2003)
This program has a stellar history, with Campus Connections AmeriCorps members
engaging close to 5,000 higher education students
in service during this year alone. Through
curricular and co-curricular service-learning
activities, these students contributed more
than 129,000 hours of service to local communities
in Whatcom, King, Spokane, Walla Walla, and
Benton-Franklin counties.

Partners in Service
Program (2002–2003)
Washington Campus Compact awarded 12 subgrantstotaling
$51,119to nine Washington higher education
institutions during the 2002-2003 Partners
in Service program year. These subgrants supported:
- Effective implementation of subgrantees
strategic plans to further institutionalize
service-learning
- Professional development opportunities
for service-learning professionals
- Regional roundtables that focused on identifying
and implementing strategies for meeting
community needs
Sixth Annual
Continuums of Service Conference (2003)
- A total of 346 colleaguesfrom across
the Campus Compact western region, the
nation, and as far away as Australia and
Guamparticipated in the sixth annual
conference entitled Service-Learning
in Challenging Times: Contexts and Crossroads.
- A total of 60 conference participantsincluding
students, faculty, staff, and community
partnerswere awarded $8,672 in scholarships
to attend the conference. These scholarships
were possible with generous funding from
Campus Compact and the Pew Charitable
Trust.
- This years conference initiated a
well-received student track created by
and for students.
- The regional conference has become a model
for professional development among service-learning
practitioners including faculty, administrators,
students, and community partners. WACC
develops and presents the conference in
partnership with the California, Hawaii,
and Oregon Campus Compacts.
Washington Reading
Corps (WRC) Program (2002–2003)
2002–2003 was a notably successful program year.
The team of 20 WRC AmeriCorps members placed
in eight Skagit County elementary schools contributed
37,900 hours of serviceand generated
550 volunteers who in turn contributed 19,700
hours of servicein support of 760 struggling
readers. Their efforts were instrumental in
fostering and strengthening connections between
elementary schools, secondary schools, higher
education institutions, and community partners
in and around the Skagit County region.
Our WRC team received the 2003 Volunteer of the
Year Group Award from the Skagit County Community
Action Agency.
