  • Engaging more than 5,000 students in service through WACC programs statewide

20022003 Specifics

Campus Connections Program (20022003)

This program has a stellar history, with Campus Connections AmeriCorps members engaging close to 5,000 higher education students in service during this year alone. Through curricular and co-curricular service-learning activities, these students contributed more than 129,000 hours of service to local communities in Whatcom, King, Spokane, Walla Walla, and Benton-Franklin counties.

Partners in Service Program (20022003)

Washington Campus Compact awarded 12 subgrants—totaling $51,119—to nine Washington higher education institutions during the 2002-2003 Partners in Service program year. These subgrants supported:

  • Effective implementation of subgrantees’ strategic plans to further institutionalize service-learning
  • Professional development opportunities for service-learning professionals
  • Regional roundtables that focused on identifying and implementing strategies for meeting community needs

Sixth Annual Continuums of Service Conference (2003)

  • A total of 346 colleagues—from across the Campus Compact western region, the nation, and as far away as Australia and Guam—participated in the sixth annual conference entitled “Service-Learning in Challenging Times: Contexts and Crossroads.”
  • A total of 60 conference participants—including students, faculty, staff, and community partners—were awarded $8,672 in scholarships to attend the conference. These scholarships were possible with generous funding from Campus Compact and the Pew Charitable Trust.
  • This year’s conference initiated a well-received student track created by and for students.
  • The regional conference has become a model for professional development among service-learning practitioners including faculty, administrators, students, and community partners. WACC develops and presents the conference in partnership with the California, Hawaii, and Oregon Campus Compacts.

Washington Reading Corps (WRC) Program (20022003)

20022003 was a notably successful program year.

The team of 20 WRC AmeriCorps members placed in eight Skagit County elementary schools contributed 37,900 hours of service—and generated 550 volunteers who in turn contributed 19,700 hours of service—in support of 760 struggling readers. Their efforts were instrumental in fostering and strengthening connections between elementary schools, secondary schools, higher education institutions, and community partners in and around the Skagit County region.

Our WRC team received the 2003 Volunteer of the Year Group Award from the Skagit County Community Action Agency.
