Awards & Recognition

National
Member institutions are eligible for national recognition of faculty, students, and their campuses. The national Campus Compact features the following honors.

  • Campus Spotlight >> Link
Would you like to see your campus in the spotlight? Member campuses with exemplary models of civic engagement are encouraged to share their stories. These campuses are encouraged to apply:
    • campuses that effectively coordinate community-based activities across academic, co-curricular, and non-academic programs
    • campuses that have made concerted efforts to feature service and service-learning both on and off campus

Selected campuses will be honored in a special civics spotlight section of national Campus Compact’s website.

  • Thomas Ehrlich Faculty Award for Service-Learning >> Link
This award recognizes and honors one faculty member each year for contributing to the integration of community or public service into the curriculum and for efforts to institutionalize service-learning.

An award of $2,000 is granted to a faculty member working at a member institution. Ten finalists are also selected and recognized for their contributions to the field.

The award is named in honor of Thomas Ehrlich, past chair of the Campus Compact executive committee, President Emeritus of Indiana University, and currently a senior scholar at Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

  • Howard R. Swearer Student Humanitarian Award >> Link
This award honors five students for their outstanding public service. Students are nominated by their institution’s president. Recipients each receive the award and $1,500 to strengthen or sustain the service program of their design or choice.

Nomination forms are sent to presidents in December; recipients are notified in May.

The award is named in honor of Howard R. Swearer, the fifteenth president of Brown University and a founder of Campus Compact.

  • Community College Swearer Award >> Link
In recognition of community colleges’ special mission and the exemplary work of their students within a two-year period, Campus Compact designates at least one Swearer award for a community college student. All member community college applicants are eligible for both this designated award and the other Swearer awards.
