Building Support for Service-Learning
Learn and Serve America provides support to schools, higher education institutions and community-based organizations, which engage students, teachers, and others in service-learning. Service-learning is a method of teaching and learning that connects classroom lessons with meaningful service to the community. Students build academic skills while strengthening communities through service. Benefits include improved academic achievement, increased student engagement and civic skills and stronger communities.
Results
Washington Campus Compact has awarded over $200,000 in sub-grants to colleges and universities in Washington and Idaho. As a result of these sub-grants, colleges and universities in Washington and Idaho:
- Developed Congressional District Action Teams to inform P-12, community leaders and policy makers about the benefits of service-learning.
- Improved school success of disadvantaged P-12 youth by growing and replicating existing tutoring, mentoring and service-learning projects.
- Standardized assessment and data collection practices.
