WACC VISTA Project
Overview
The WACC VISTA Project will:
- mobilize
college service-learners and volunteers to serve
poverty-affected students and community members,
- develop and sustain campus/community
partnerships to serve poverty-affected students
and community members, and
- develop college service-learning courses focused
on poverty issues.
Mobilizing college students to mentor
disadvantaged students and serve in
community-based organizations (CBOs) serving
poverty-affected community members will help keep
at-risk (of poverty) K-12 students engaged in
their education and provide CBOs with valuable
human resources and future civically minded
community members.
Program Impact
Students gain valuable service experience and
awareness of poverty issues in their
community, learn civic skills and behaviors,
and are more likely to stay in college and
achieve academic success.
K-12 schools gain mentors who will help
improve academic success of disadvantaged
youth and sustained partnerships with
colleges.
Colleges improve retention rates
and academic success of students; develop a
more civically engaged student population;
and strengthen their relationships with
communities and schools.
